LAGOS MONTHLY SANITATION HOLDS ON SATURDAY

The Lagos State Government has announced that there will be restriction of human and vehicular movement in Lagos, as the state's monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise for the month of February will be observed between the hours of 7.00am-10.00am on Saturday, 27th February, 2016.

According to the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, Lagosians are urged to actively participate in the exercise through the cleaning of their homes, drains, frontage and environment.

Dr. Adejare explained that apart from this state organized event, the cleaning of our immediate environment should be an everyday affair, stressing the frequent practice of basic environmental sanitation helps in health promotion and disease prevention.
He reminded Lagosians that the global climatic weather conditions have become so unpredictable, adding that Lagosians should properly dispose their waste through LAWMA and authorised PSP operators as dumping of waste into canals impedes the flow of storm water in our drainage channels.

The Commissioner warned residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from this illegal act as the coverage of the PSP Operators‎ has been widened to effectively cover most residents in the State.

According to him, “ in anticipation of early rains this year, the Drainage Maintenance Department and Emergency Flood Abatement Department has commenced massive clearing and dredging of drains and canals across the state in order to reduce the incidence of flooding in the state.

He however advised that as much as the state is committed towards ensuring that our canals and channels are cleared at all times, Lagosians should desist from dumping of refuse into canals so as to attain a flood free Lagos.

In order to attain total compliance of the restriction order and ensure full participation of Lagosians in the sanitation exercise, Adejare implored Interstate Bus‎ Operators, the State Transport Owners and Road Transport Workers Association to comply with the restriction of vehicular movement order between 7.00am-10.00am as any vehicle caught violating this order will be dealt with appropriately, while passengers in such vehicles will also be prosecuted according to the State Environmental Sanitation Laws.

He further assured that Law Enforcement Agencies including Nigerian Police and officials from LAWMA, LASTMA and KAI have been fully mobilized to enforce the restriction.
