The
management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has
confirmed reports that it demanded for N1.85 million from a
non-governmental organisation, Edubox, as charges to release the data of
the best students during the 2014/2015 May/June West African Senior
Certificate Examinations in each of the nation’s 36 states and the
Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
New Telegraph
exclusively gathered through the Head of WAEC’s Public Affairs Unit,
Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, who explained that the amount was the required
processing fee for the documents.
It
would be recalled that Nigerians had recently slammed the examination
body for making the request, describing it as a confirmation of the
allegation by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun that
examination bodies in the country are corrupt.
According
to Ojijeogu, the development is not new, as it has been WAEC’s standard
practice to charge a fee for the production of such data for
individuals or organisations that require them. He added that WAEC was
even magnanimous to grant waivers of N1.85 million to the organization,
saying the due money to be paid would have been N3.7 million.
