The Nigerian Police force has reiterated that officers of
the command are not empowered with the right to search mobile phones of
citizens during their routine stop and search exercise on the roads.
Nigerians for a long
time has asked the question if it is right for police officers to search mobile
phones during the routing stop and search exercise on the road.
This remake was made during an interview with the Lagos
state police PRO, Dolapo Badmus who shed more light on the issue saying that
the act is totally wrong.
In her own words
“Your phone is private; it is your private property because
people do a lot of private stuffs on their mobile phones so it is wrong. Police officers have no right to search your
phone except there is a reasonable ground to do so.
“To me it is like someone seeing you on the road and orders
you to pull off your trousers that he wants to search your pant, that is how I feel
whenever I hear about police searching someone’s phone. It is totally wrong
unless you are a subject of investigation.” She said
“We have been working on stopping that with our men, and the
ones that have been going against the rules the leadership of the
command will never spear them.” She concluded
