The Commander of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, Disu
Olatunji has reiterated that any citizen can be a target for kidnap, noting
that every community member should help the police in combating crime by
providing useful information to the RRS.
Speaking to the press at the monthly community
newspaper forum, the commander said that the police need information from the
people who dwell in the various communities as they are the only ones who know
everything that is happening around them.
“We need information from the communities though there
are good citizens who provide us with information without demands we commend
them, community policing is an important tool in combating crime. Throughout
last year we did not record cases of bank robbery, meaning that we have been
able to police the land very well the problem now is the riverine areas.
“If you see strange movement of boats with the
passengers on military uniforms in the early hours of the morning, know that
they are militants. Please do well to inform the police it will really assist
us in keeping them in check.” He said
On the issue of kidnapping, the commander advised the
public to take precaution on what they say in public as they may be giving out
information to the wrong people unknowingly.
“We should try and take precaution, being mindful of
what we say in the public, especially on public transport and on social media.
Do not stand out, don’t be flamboyant, always remove
the tag of your work place once you are out of the office, most at times
it attracts them. Disu said.
He also warned parents to have family code in which
they can freely communicate with their family without anyone else knowing.
“Every parent should have a FAMILY CODE which can
enable you communicate effectively to your children without any other person
knowing what you are saying.”
“We need the communities to assist us in monitoring
the RRS officers on patrol and give us feedback on anything on this emergency
number – 09053950347 (text messages only). We are working for the people we are
not their masters” he concluded.
